-Made of four (thin skin) or five (thick skin) layers
*Thin Skin
-Four layers (deep to superficial)
*Stratum Basale
-Attatches to Basal Lamina
*Intertwining collegen fibers
-Dermal Papillae increase strength of connection
-Keratinocyes are formed here
-Merkel cell
*Receptor that stimulates sensory nerves that the brain perceives as touch
-Melanocyte
*Produces the pigment Melanin
-Gives hair and skin color and protects them
*Stratum Spinosum
-Spiny in appearrence

*Stratum Granulosum
-grainy appearance
-Thicker cell membranes

*Accumulates as lamellar granules within the cells
-Cell organelles disintegrate and leave behind keratin, keratohyalin, and cell membranes
*Stratum Corneum
-Superficial layer
-15-30 layers of cells
-Protection
*Thick Skin
-Five Layers
* Stratum Lucidum (between Granulosum and Coreum)
-Smooth
-Only on hands and feet
