Injury and Healing
-Caused by sharp objects, heat, excessive pressure or friction
-Healing
*A blood clot is formed
-Stops bleeding and scabs over
*Fibroblasts divide, creating granulation tissue
*Capillaries provide increased blood flow
*Immune cells attack any infection
Burns
-Occurs when skin is damaged by intense heat, radiation, electricity, or chemicals
-Results in loss of fluid and cell death, dehydration, electrolyte imbalance, and renal and circulatory failure
-Burned skin is vulnerable to bacteria
-Measuring System
*First Degree Burn
-Only affects epidermis
-Heal on their own in a few days
*Second Degree Burn
-Affects part of the dermis
-Blistering of the skin
-Will heal within a few weeks
*Third Degree Burn
-Affects nerve endings
-May appear black, white, or red
-Will heal slowly without medical attention
*Fourth Degree Burn
-Affects the muscle
-Cannot be healed by the body
*Undamaged skin is grafted over burn site
