ACCESSORY STRUCTURES

                     Hair

-Texture is decided by the shape and structure of the cortex
-Visible hair is entirely made of dead, keratinized cells
-Hair growth
         *Basal cells in bulb create keratin
         *As keratin builds up, the shaft pushes through the follicle toward the skin
-Cutting and chemically removing hair does not damage bulb
         *Hair will grow back
-"Yanking" and and electrolysis remove the bulb
         *Hair will not grow back

                  Nails

-Avascular
-Provide protection for the phalanges
       *They get the most mechanical stress
-Help when picking up objects
-Made of dense keratinized dead cells
