COMPONENTS AND LAYERS

            Keratinocytes

-Make and store keratin
-Give nails and hair hardness and water resistance
-When in the corneum, they are dead and can be rubbed off
-Life cycle
         *Mitosis in the Stratum Basal
*Differentiation occurs
*Cells are pushed toward the surface
*Anoikis occurs in the Stratum Granulosum
   -Nuclei degenerate
-Organelles are digested by lysosomal enzymes

           Melanocytes

-Create melanin
-Melanin is transferred into the keratinocytes via melanosome
-Eumelanin
         *Black and brown
-Pheomelanin
         *Red color
-Darker skinned people produce more melanin
-Exposure to UV rays speeds up melanin production
-It takes 10 days after exposure for melanin to synthesize
         *Sunburns
